Common Herbal Ingredients in Skincare

Natural products seem to be sweeping the skincare industry right now.  And, with more people becoming interested in getting back to the simple ways to take care of themselves, it’s not a surprise that so many companies are taking notice.  The kinds of ingredients that are in natural cosmetic products just as varied as cosmetics have ever been.  And, sometimes it can be a little overwhelming to choose the product that’s right for you, especially based on the ingredients.

Common Herbal Ingredients in Skincare

Just because a product is natural doesn’t mean that it will work for everybody.  But, there are a lot of benefits to buying natural products.  Natural products tend to have fewer ingredients and are usually less irritating to the skin.  Once you know of some of the more common herbal ingredients in skincare today, it will be much easier to be confident about your cosmetic choices. 


Oils may not seem like herbal ingredients, but they do often come from plants.  They often lay the groundwork for moisturizing products, including lotions, soaps, and masks.  And, different oils can give you different desired effects.  Cocoa butter, for example, which is made from the fat surrounding the cacao bean, often gives a rich, chocolatey scent to the products that contain it.  It’s also incredible for dry or aging skin.  Coconut oil, on the other hand, is suitable for most skin types because it’s not quite as rich as cocoa butter.  It is one of the most common cosmetic oils.  Other oils include grapeseed, castor, almond, jojoba, and many more.


Springtime blooms are not just great in a vase on your counter.  Many people grow their own edible flowers for the purpose of drying the blossoms and brewing tea or eating them outright.  Not surprisingly, many of them are also great in your skincare products.  Chamomile is not only good for relaxing tea, but it also works as a very gentle essential oil for sensitive skin.  Some people use it to treat bruises.  Roses have a beautiful aroma and is great for mature skin and may even help with skin discoloration.  Geraniums have antiseptic properties that can help oily or pale skin become balanced, just like other toners.  And, calendula can help solve all kinds of skin problems, including dry, acne-prone, and aging skin.


Most people draw the line of leaf consumption at the occasional spinach salad.  However, there are any number of leaves out there that are not only edible, but great for your skin.  Mint, such as peppermint and spearmint, is fantastic for adding a cooling effect to your cosmetics.  And, mint can also help brighten up dull skin.  Basil is a mild astringent and people have been using it for thousands of years as an anti-aging remedy.  Eucalyptus is an antiseptic and is great for promoting overall health, especially when it comes to respiratory quality.  And, green tea can neutralize the damage of free radicals while repairing skin cells.  If you can’t find these plants fresh, they’re easy enough to find in essential oil form or dried.  Sometimes skincare is much easier than it seems.  Many people even make their own skin products at home.  However, if you prefer store-bought items, pay attention to the label.  You may find that these natural ingredients crop up quite a bit.
