How Does Dehydration Affect The Skin?

Drinking adequate water is important for keeping your body healthy and vibrant. But, it can also be key to keeping your skin healthy and radiant. And, there are several ways your skin can become dehydrated. So, below we’ll discuss what can cause dehydration of the skin and how dehydration affects the skin. We’ll also talk about how to stop this dehydration from happening.

How Does Dehydration Affect The SkinWhat Does Dehydrated Skin Look Like?

You probably know what your skin looks like when it’s dry. No matter how oily you are, at some point you’ll get dry patches. Some people have dry patches all the time, or just dry skin in general. Dry skin usually looks dull and a little lifeless. And, it feels rough to the touch and usually has a little texture. That’s when you know that your skin needs extra moisture, and that you should be drinking more water. Dry skin also causes wrinkles to form faster, so it’s important to keep skin hydrated and healthy.

Why Does Skin Become Dehydrated?

Obviously, dehydrated skin means you’re not moisturizing well enough. Or, it comes out in the winter time because of all the dry harsh air. However, as we age, our skin becomes thinner and can’t hold onto moisture as well. So, it starts to be dehydrated more often. And, this makes wrinkles look worse and actually appear faster. Basically, as you age, your body replaces cells with new cells that contain less water. Over time, the percentage of water in your body goes down. So, skin takes a hit during this and is much more dehydrated.

What Else Causes Dehydration?

There are many things that cause the skin to not have enough moisture. First, cleansing poorly can strip the skin of all its water. Truly, if you wash your face and experience a squeaky-clean feeling, your cleanser is too harsh for your skin. Look for something more gentle and moisturizing, or you’re just going to battle dry skin. Then, other products like acne treatments, skin peels, Retinol, and more, can cause dryness of the skin because they’re too harsh and they strip everything out of it.

In addition to those things, just simply neglecting your skin and your body can lead to dehydration. Because, if you don’t drink enough water or apply lotions to your skin, your skin will dry out quickly. So, you constantly have to be putting moisture back into the skin since air strips so much out of it. Then, using a moisturizer that’s too light can also leave skin wanting more. Finally, even the air around you, like climate controlled heat or air conditioning can sap skin of moisture. The same goes for a hot shower, which often leaves your skin papery and rough.

What Happens If Skin Is Constantly Dehydrated?

Basically, the appearance of your skin will go down the drain. Because, dehydrated skin looks dull, tired, and often rough in texture. And, it’s also hard to achieve that dewy look that so many people are after. It can also make skin look older and make wrinkles stand out like a sore thumb. Even worse, dry skin leads to the degradation of collagen and elastin. So, having dehydrated skin actually makes wrinkles form faster than ever. So, moisturizing your skin is not only good for you, but it also keeps you looking younger for longer.  This is one of many bad habits you can have for your skin.  Check our list to make sure you’re not making any other anti-aging blunders.
