The other main contributor to aging skin and wrinkles is sun damage. Some studies even link sun damage to eighty-percent of skin aging. This is not as easily avoided as smoking, but you can prevent some sun damage. Too much sun exposure without protection will definitely lead to wrinkles and fine lines. The sun releases harmful UV rays that can damage your pigmentation, elasticity, collagen levels, and color. The sun is at its most powerful between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so if it’s possible, it’s best to stay out of the sun during these hours. This probably isn’t realistic all the time, however, so it’s vital that you apply strong sunscreen (30 SPF or higher) if you know you’re going to be out in the sun for long periods of time.
Natural Aging Causes Wrinkles
There are factors of aging that you simply can’t do much about. The natural process of aging inevitably results in wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. For example, your epidermis, or the outer layer of skin is replaced about once every 60 days. As you get older, this time gets longer. This slowdown shows your age. Below that is the dermis, which contains collagen and elastic fibres. This is what makes your skin look taut and firm when you’re young. The collagen and elasticity lessens with age, however, and your skin begins to sag and wrinkle.
Proper Nutrition As Prevention
One of the easiest things you can do to prevent wrinkles or reduce the appearance of age, is simply to eat well. Free radicals can cause cellular damage which eventually leads to wrinkles and other damage. To fight these results with food and proper nutrition, look for antioxidant-rich vegetables. Tomatoes are powerful antioxidant foods that slow down the aging process. Other vegetables like broccoli are also good anti-aging foods that boost your immunity and natural defenses. Any other kinds of anti-inflammatory can improve the look of your skin as well. As always, it’s best to treat wrinkles and fine lines is by preventing various kinds of damage in the first place.
