Top 7 Worst Skincare HabitsWorst Skincare Habits

  1. 1. Not Using Sunscreen

If you don’t use sunscreen, you’re basically asking for your skin to look older and get damaged. The sun is one of the biggest dangers to our skin, and there are still people out there who aren’t taking it seriously. Tanning, whether in a booth or outside, can seriously damage the skin, leading to things like premature aging and cancer. In fact, experts recommend even wearing sunscreen all year, not just in the summer. Because, the sun is so pervasive, even in the winter it can damage your skin.

  1. Not Taking Makeup Off Before Bed

There are a number of reasons this is bad for your skin. First, pollution can collect on the outside of your makeup, and that can leech into your skin over night. And, pollution contains free radicals that can cause wrinkles and skin damage over time. Then, makeup clogs your pores, and that leads to breakouts and blackheads. In fact, experts say that leaving makeup on your skin at night allows dirt and bacteria to form in the skin. And, all of that dirt can actually lead to wrinkles and lines over time.

  1. Cleansing Too Often

On the other hand, you don’t want to clean your face until it’s squeaky and tight feeling, either. If you cleanse your face often, you’re actually stripping your face of all the good moisture and oils that keep it healthy. And, the drier your skin is, the faster it wrinkles over time. Cleansing with a product that contains harsh ingredients can harm the barrier of your face over time. So, more pollutants and free radicals can get in. We recommend just washing with water when you wake up, and then picking a creamy or oily cleanser for night time.

  1. Exfoliating Too Roughly

You should be exfoliating your skin one to three times a week. But, there’s a right and a wrong way to go about this. If you exfoliate every single day with a harsh scrub, you’re going to break down collagen and strip your skin of its natural oils. And, that leads to premature aging and dry skin. Then, you can cause microscopic scratches on the surface of your skin if you exfoliate with a product that is too rough. But, you need to exfoliate to get rid of dead skin cells. So, we recommend using scrubs that don’t sting or leave your skin red.

  1. Not Sleeping Enough

Sleep is obviously very important for your body and its healthy functioning. But, it’s also the time that your skin repairs itself. So, you need quality shut-eye to give your skin some time to breathe and complete its normal cell turnover process. In addition to that, not sleeping for at least seven hours every night leads to dull skin and the formation of fine lines. Because, when the hormone melatonin drops off from lack of sleep, your skin cells can’t turn over as well, and that causes aging and dull skin.

  1. Tanning Indoors Or Out

This is one of the worst things you could do to your skin. Truly, nothing breaks down skin and causes signs of aging like tanning beds or tanning outside. Both sources of light can break down your skin and make it age prematurely. Tanning causes things like wrinkles and sun spots to appear on your skin. And, those can be hard to reverse. Because, tanning breaks down collagen in the skin. Not to mention, tanning causes skin cancer, which we’re pretty sure you want to avoid even more than aging.

  1. Smoking

By now, you should know that smoking is bad for your body. But, it also wreaks havoc on your skin over time. You’ve probably seen someone with those lines around their mouth that looks like they constantly pucker their lips. That comes from smoking and repeatedly putting your mouth around cigarettes. Then, all the chemicals inside cigarettes damage your skin. For example, cigarettes cause things like wrinkles, fine lines, blotchy skin tone and even acne. And, whereas people who age normally would get this signs too, a smoker gets them a lot worse and a lot earlier in life. So, save your skin and put down the smokes.
